Dozens of Seacoast residents who support a school in Haiti come out once a year to dance, drink and celebrate the progress they have seen at the Eben Ezer School since they first got involved in 2010.
Combo Sabroso will be back at the Caribbean Nights Party in Portsmouth Saturday, April 6, with its unique blend of reggae and Latin music as it helps raise money for the Eben Ezer School, which now educates more then 500 children thanks to 17 years of support from the Seacoast. Dozens of residents as well as several Rotary Clubs in the Seacoast support this school in a country where half the people can’t read or write and more than half of adults are unemployed. “I love this project and organization because any participation or support feels so personal and impactful, said Vicki Stewart of Eliot, who supports a teacher at the school and will speak at the dance. “The pictures, videos and grassroots donations allow our community to feel like we are an important part of their community.” The Caribbean Nights Party will include an update on progress at the school amidst the profound political and social challenges Haiti has faced in recent years. The Eben Ezer School was started by Haitian American Lucia Anglade of New York on the land where she grew up. Several of the board members for the non-profit that runs the school, Life and Hope Haiti, are from the Seacoast. The room has filled in the past few years, as people learn of the school and Combo Sabroso, which has helped raise money for students in Milot since the first dance in 2010. Combo Sabroso, which draws a full house to the annual fundraiser, has long played a part in helping the Eben Ezer School educate children in Milot in the hills of northern Haiti. Tickets - $30 in advance and $40 at the door - are available on line through Paypal at lifeandhopehaiti.org/donate. They can also be purchased at A Little Something in South Berwick, Ceres Bakery in Portsmouth, and Lil’s Cafe in Kittery. More information is available from newslifeandhope@yahoo.com.
