Congratulations to 4th Grader Jack Cicero and to Senior Makili Matty, the Shapleigh School and R.W.Traip Academy Rotary Students of the Month.
On the January 28, the Rotary Club of Kittery met at R.W. Traip Academy to recognize the Shapleigh School and the Traip Academy January Student of the Month. Students are selected by the schools based upon various criteria, including student effort, commitment to their education, overcoming challenges, school involvement, and working with and support of their peers. Traip rotates sponsorship around the various school departments by month, while Shapleigh rotates by grade, usually comments comes from throughout the school's staff who the student has interacted with.

The Shapleigh Student of the Month for January is 4th Grader Jack Cicero. Jack's Home Room teacher could not attend but enlisted Teacher Blayne Matty to introduce him, providing a long list of comments of support from other school staff. Jack has made a wonderful impression during his first year at Shapleigh. He is eager to learn, his is very willing to participate, he is supportive and considerate of teachers and staff. Jack is also helpful and supportive of his fellow classmates.

The R.W. Traip Academy Student of the Month Senior Makili Matty was nominated by the English department . his presenter, Teacher Scott Singer, took a different approach to presenting Makili, he read one of Makili's award winning poems. Makili is not afraid to try different things, and to change direction when he feels he needs to . Besides his academic work, Makili was also one of the leads in the school's fall theater production, he was captain of the soccer team , and he is president of the Traip Interact Club (Rotary high school service club) one of the largest in the District.
Makili is well known to the Club as he is an alumnae of the Rotary Youth Leadership Camp (RYLA), and a Rotary Student Youth Short term Exchange student (Italy). Makili has been accepted at Colby College for the next phase of his academic career.

School District Superintendent (and Rotary Club member) Eric Waddell had our two students field Club member's questions, and then presented them with Rotary medallions and had them sign a book to be donated to the school libraries. Their names are added to the plaques in their schools.
